A sexy beast but too bad about the smell

The New York Times reports

“If you have a dog sitting on your desk, it’s always better if he has a nice scent,” said Gail Marcus, 60, who brings her dog, an 8½-pound Pomeranian named Nicky, to her office in Long Island City, Queens. (Nicky may have a small body “but he has a lot of coat,” she explained.)

Ms. Marcus sprays him with a scent called Sexy Beast, which she discovered at Henri Bendel’s about a year ago for $65 for a 3.4-ounce bottle. (There is also a limited holiday bling version of Sexy Beast, with encrusted Swarovski crystals, which retails for $850.)

We need a Consumer Reports style test for this to see if it actually works. And, oh yeah, it's 100% vegan, according to the website.

Are Scottish Terriers hard to train?

The editor of the Scottish Terrier and Dog News completely understands why terriers have the reputation they do for being hard headed: they deserve it. Before she acquired Bridget just over a year ago, the Scottie News editor had different non-terrier breeds of dogs and she can state authoritatively that they were much easier to train. Yet the editor of the Scottish Terrier and Dog News remains determined and she wants to share some inspiration with other Scottie dog owners who face the same plight.

YouTube has several examples of well-trained Scottish Terriers starting with this anonymous Scot

The ubiquitous Baily can also be seen hula hooping obediently as Riley, an older gentleman, looks on

And then, of course, there are Boone and Kenzie, the most famous of the well-behaved Scotties

Even Spencer, whose owner describes him as "kinda dumb" silly (When Spencer's owner saw that he was featured here, she changed the headline so we have followed her lead) compared to her other dogs, Mackenzie the Dachshund and April the Boston Terrier, has mastered the "bang" trick"

So, Scottie dog owners, take heart and read these very interesting training tips from Scottish Terrier Rescue of North Alabama. One day, we too will have our dogs up on YouTube.

Or else we can send them off to jail to be trained by hardened criminals.

Barney Bush: working dog

Nov 6, 2008 Update: See video of Barney Bush, the first dog biting a Reuters reporter plus the stories about Barney the Scottish Terrier that you've never seen before and pictures of young Jackie Kennedy with a Scottie dog.

Update December 2007:
The Holiday video is out

Being the White House dog strikes the Scottish Terrier and Dog News as a pretty good gig. You have a huge house and grounds, plenty of staff to spoil you (apart from Karl Rove), access to Air Force One, fame, groupies, you name it.

But don't anyone think that the presidential Scottish Terriers, Barney and Miss Beazley, don't have to sing for their supper. A Beltway insider and Scottie dog owner notified us that the White House dogs get to work on their Christmas video as early as November.

Meanwhile, across the pond, another loyal Scottie News reader reports that in the new BBC documentary about the Queen, Barney and Miss Beazley are shown as they get set to meet the monarch. Alas, no relevant excerpts are on YouTube and, while ABC has bought the U.S. rights, the date for airing the show hasn't been set yet.

Scottie dog, Scottie dog where have you been?

More Scottish Terrier rescue stories

The publisher and editor of the Scottish Terrier and Dog News is not a sentimental type but there are a few things that are sure to bring tears to her eyes. Among them are weddings, funerals and dog rescue stories. There's just something about an animal resuce that turns out well that gives you faith. So, here, from the Scottish Terrier Club of America are the rescue tales of Miss Fiona, McGregor and Meg. Pass the hankies please.

Why we love those London tabs

The Sun reports:

PECKISH pooch Taffy needed emergency surgery to remove a pair of underpants from his gut — the 40TH pair he has gobbled.

The Springer Spaniel pup got the kids’ briefs stuck in his stomach after finding them on the floor.

Owner Eubie Saayman, 34 — a vet — performed the two-hour op.

Eubie, of Tamworth, Staffs, said 18-month-old Taffy has also eaten 300 socks, 15 pairs of shoes and a Mercedes key fob.

Judge the woman by her dogs

Over at the Daily Dachshund and Dog News, we reported recently on the fate of the late Brooke Astor's two Doxies, Girlsie and Boysie. Then we turned up this piece in the Economist published shortly after Mrs. Astor and the notorious Queen of Mean, Leona Helmsley, died within days of each other:

Mrs Astor had dogs as well-behaved as herself, silky and smooth-haired to pose for photographers or to have their portraits in her 19th-century collection on the staircase of Holly Hill, her weekend retreat. Mrs Helmsley had a Maltese bitch called Trouble, tied with pink ribbons and small enough to stuff in a purse, who sniffed at diners' legs in her restaurants and nipped their heels until they bled.
Wonder what they'll say bout the Scottie News publisher when she's gone?

Fully clothed former first lady and Scottie dog

This shot of former first lady, Grace Coolidge, with Rob Roy the dog and Barney the White House Scottish Terrier, reminds us that are Beltway insider readers have been awfully quiet lately. Can there really be nothing happening on the D.C. dog front? Is everyone totally absorbed by the mideast talks?

Australian Shepherd isn't Australian -- what next?

At least the Scottish Terrier is undeniably, incontrovertibly Scottish unlike the made-in-the-USA Australian Shepherd, who won the 2007 National Dog Show.

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News believes there should be rules against naming dogs after countries with which they have no ties.

We are therefore starting a campaign to rename the Australian Shepherd the Cowboy's Companion, a name that more accurately reflects the breed history:

While there are many theories as to the origin of the Australian Shepherd, the breed as we know it today developed exclusively in the United States. The Australian Shepherd was given its name because of their association with the Basque sheepherders who came to the United States from Australia in the 1800's. The Aussie rose rapidly in popularity with the boom of western riding after World War II, becoming known to the general public via rodeos, horse shows, movies and television. Their inherent versatility and trainability made them useful on American farms and ranches.

Live Blogging the National Dog Show

Update: And the winner is the Australian Shepherd who took her first best-in-show title. Even though we're the Scottie News and were rooting for the Scottish Terrier, first, and the Sealyham, who won best terrier, second, we know how to be gracious in defeat. Good on ya, girl.

The show's just getting under way. We're watching the working dogs.

Is it just me or does the judge in the red jacket look like Madeleine Albright?

You can see the Scottish Terrier who won Best in Breed if you go here and scroll down.

12:42 The Sealyham won best terrier.

1:20 Even though it's not a holiday at the Scottish Terrier and Dog News Canadian world headquarters, we find this perfect viewing for a family gathering. It's easy to duck in and out of the room and ooh and ah. Very calming with just enough dramatic tension.

And the Australian Shepherd wins.

Midweek Photo Op: Scottie dog, topless woman

Hydrogen peroxide cure for raisins and chocolate

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News had not heard of using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in dogs who have overdosed on chocolate, raisins, grapes or --worst case scenario -- chocolate-covered raisins so we were a little taken aback when Abigail discussed administering such a treatment in yesterday's comments.

A little research, however, showed she did exactly the right thing.

National Dog show airs Thanksgiving Thursday

Update: See our report on the show and the winner.

Given that the Scottie News team makes our headquarters in Canada, we were not aware of the American tradition of sitting around the television on Thanksgiving Thursday to watch the National Dog Show until we read about it in the Washington Post. We were happy to learn, however, that the host of the show -- dog writer, dancer and TV guy, John O'Hurley -- is a former Scottish Terrier owner.

We'll try to catch at least some of it.

Scottish Terriers, Speedos don't mix -- or do they?

Carnegie Mellon University may have officially adopted the Scottish Terrier as its mascot but the swim team isn't exactly jumping aboard. When asked what she thought of the new mascot, swimmer Molly Evans replied: "The Scottie dog is cute, but I’m not sure how good he would look in a Speedo."

Well according to an official dog costume judge, "the Scottie can get away with anything" so we suggest the swim team at lest give the mascot a try. There's no shortage of examples to follow.

We don't have this problem at the Scottish Terrier and Dog News headquarters where chocolate is consumed within minutes of arriving on the premises.

Musharraf's Scottish Terrier connection

Further to our last post on the whereabouts of General Pervez Musharraf's dogs, we discovered these great acrylics of the Pakistani president with his Pekingese, Dot and Buddy.

Lo and behold, we also found President Bush and Barney by the very same artist. Here are the links for the Flickr page and the artist's Chapati Mystery blog.

Talk about six degrees of Scottish Terrier separation.

Where are Musharraf's dogs?

With Pakistan under a state of emergency and protests being staged around the world against President Pervez Musharraf, the Scottish Terrier and Dog News has been investigating a little covered canine angle -- the symbolic and important disappearance of Musharraf's dogs.

When the general first seized power in 1999, he made a point of not just breaking Muslim taboos by owning dogs and drinking liquor but also by being open about it.

Asra Nomani, a journalist who worked with Daniel Pearl in Pakistan and was protrayed in the movie, A Mighty Heart, wrote in 2001 shortly after the U.S. forged its curent alliance with Pakistan:

The dog issue, in fact, seems to hound Musharraf. In India, a columnist refers to Musharraf as 'a dog-loving nattily uniformed general.' Musharraf boldly posed holding his two dogs for his photo-op after taking over the country. Go figure. The man knew that many Muslims go running when a dog starts approaching them, even with its tail wagging, especially with its slobbery pink tongue hanging out of its mouth. We have to do something called wuzu, a ritual washing, before doing namaz. We're taught that touching a dog makes you dirty for namaz, so that you shouldn't keep a dog in the house. Others interpret what is said in the Quran more liberally, though.
Somewhere over the past six years, however, as Musharraf has felt the pressure from radical Muslims over his alliance with the United States, his dogs have reportedly disappeared. Whether it's just from the spotlight or from Musharraf's home as well is a question the Scottie News is currently investigating.

Just as readers helped us get to the bottom of the story of Vladimir Putin's poodle, we are hoping someone will be able to tip us off as to what's going on with General Musharraf's dogs.

And since we're on the subject of Putin and his public fetish for big dogs, it's interesting to note that, in his autobiography "in the Line of Fire," Musharraf had this to say about whether size matters:
I prefer small dogs, though, not the huge ones. This surprises my friends, for they expect a commando to have something like a rottweiler. I think people who keep rottweilers, and similar dogs, have a need to cultivate a macho image.
Update: Check out these fabulous new artist's renditions of Musharraf and his pekes, and President Bush and Barney.

Found: Photo of Scottish Terrier with Naked Lady

Those of you who headed over to visit our new site, the Daily Dachshund and Dog News likely noticed that we featured a lot of photos of topless people with Doxies.

Some of you even suggested this was a cheap publicity stunt, which it most certainly was not. In fact, it was just one of those crazy old things. Certainly if we had thought nude photos were the way to attract readers to the Scottish Terrier and Dog News, we would have published them long ago.

In fact, in printing our first Naughty Scottie photo, we are simply complying with the requests of certain readers who were jealous of what they saw going on at the Daily Doxie. And let us tell you, it was no easy task tracking down this photo of a naked woman with a Scottish Terrier by renowned Hungarian illustrator Willy Pogany.

While the topless doxie photos just fell in our proverbial laps, we had to search far and wide to find the nude figure with scottie dog. Perhaps, this is because Doxies originally hail from Deutschland where they think nothing of nude sun bathing at the local park and heading into the co-ed sauna with only the tiniest towel. Certainly, it is hard to imagine that type of behaviour being tolerated in Scotland. Even the scottie in question doesn't seem to know what to make of it all.

Update: One thing led to another and the Scottie News ended up publishing more photos of topless women with their Scottish Terriers.

Update on Angus the Horse Whisperer Barker

After that great video we showed earlier this week of Scottish Terrier Angus challenging a horse -- well, a horse statue -- one of the commenters over at YouTube suggested: "This is so funny. You should let him out to attack it!"

Dog Whisperer versus the others

The wonderful dog writer Denise Flaim reviews the Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan's new book, Be the Pack Leader. She notes:

One of the criticisms of Millan's first, chart-topping book, "Cesar's Way," was that it offered little in the way of specifics. Along with plenty of case studies, Millan's second effort offers a few more tangibles, including a pie chart divvying up the components of an hour-long walk; analyses of different behavior-modification tools, from citronella collars to scat mats; and a discussion of breed differences.

In the same column, Flaim also looks at new books by more mild-mannered trainers who take exception to Cesar's methods. Et tu Denise.

Oz City council offers discount for trained dogs

The ABC reports:

In a bid to curb canine misbehaviour, the Clarence City Council (in Tasmania, Asustralia) is offering rebates for dogs that have been to obedience school.

The Council's new Dog Management Policy offers a 50 per cent discount for registering dogs that have completed grade four obedience training.

It has also waived the registration fee for dogs adopted from the RSPCA and the Dog's Home.

The Mayor Jock Campbell says the council wants to encourage owners to take more responsibility for troublesome dogs.

Clarence seems to be having dog issues. Recently there were also attempts to restrict the canine presence at the local beach.

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News has been informed that Scotties are few and far between down under. No wonder -- if they dress them like this.

Heather Necessity: Crufts 1929 Best in Show

Crufts 1929 Best in Show, originally uploaded by The Kennel Club.

Follow the links and you will find the Crufts Best in Show Roll of Honour over at Flickr. At the time of Heather's win, Time magazine noted:

The four breeds of dog currently regarded by U. S. dealers as "most fashionable" are all terriers: Scottish, Cairn, Sealyham, wire-haired fox. Most of the best-bred Scotties in the U. S. last fortnight foregathered on a terrace of Mr. & Mrs. Edward F. Button's Long Island estate and permitted Dr. Clarence Cook Little, onetime president of the University of Michigan, now managing director of the American Society for the Control of Cancer, to compare their little black perfections in the Specialty Show of the Scottish Terrier Club, No. 1 event of the U. S. Scotty season. While the owners sipped tea and talked dog-shop, Dr. Little chose Watchman of Monagh Lea as No. 1 U. S. Scotty. This dog's value: $3,000. His prize: $15 and a silver cup. World's best Scotty is Heather Necessity, best-of-breed at London's last Crystal palace show.

Rising life expectancy means more older pets

The Colorado Springs Gazette looks at the challenges of living with aging dogs:

“Pets are living a lot longer. They get better nutrition, better medical care and aren’t out wandering neighborhoods having accidents,” says Rebecca Ruch-Gallie, coordinator for community practice at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

The average life expectancy of a cat has nearly doubled since 1930, with indoor cats living an average of 8 to 16 years, according to the Peoria (Ill.) Humane Society. The average life expectancy of a dog is 12.8 years, but the number varies widely depending on breed and size.

Terrier survives Christmas pudding

Six-month old Barney stole and ate some Christmas puddings sent to his owner, the editor of a British food magazine, for sampling. The border terrier survived but vets note that grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs.

Carnegie Mellon unveils 'bad ass' Scottie mascot

One of the first stories we covered here at the Scottish Terrier and Dog News was Carnegie Mellon's adoption of the Scottie dog as its official mascot. Well now, with the help of the design firm SME Branding and lots of focus groups consisting of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, the university has come up with a unique new Scottie logo to be unveiled Saturday during the season's last home football game.

“CMU is finally going to have an image that isn’t a piece of plaid cloth. It’s true, the Scottie dog isn’t all that intimidating, but at least we now have an animate object to represent our student body,” said Julia Kramkova, a sophomore business administration major who was in one of the focus groups that viewed the mascot design."The Scottie dog has been a part of CMU since the times of Carnegie Tech and it is great to know that we are now officially embracing him. I saw the original design for Scottie and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I think a lot of people will really like the new Scottie — he’s quite the bad-ass!”

Can't wait to see him. And hope he brings good luck for the game.

Dogs change world, perform Heimlich maneuver

Dog historian, psychologist and Canadian Stanley Coren names 10 dogs that played key historical roles. Number four is the terrier -- Welsh not Scottish -- who comforted President Kennedy during the Cuban missile crisis.

Meanwhile just yesterday, the ASPCA honoured dogs who had saved their owners' lives. According to the New York Times, "a 2-year-old golden retriever named Toby, performed a modified Heimlich maneuver on his owner, Debbie Parkhurst of North East, Md., when she choked on a piece of apple. Toby pushed her to the floor and jumped up and down on Ms. Parkhurst’s chest until he dislodged the piece of apple."

Oh yes, a cat was honoured too. Just goes to show...

Shush up guys, enjoy the Finnish forest

This one reminds the Scottish Terrier and Dog News of talk radio. Wonder if they have that in Finland, where these two reside.

How to train a stubborn Scottie -- in jail!

Are you having problems training your hard-headed Scottish Terrier? Well, maybe a hardened criminal could help you out.

The New Bern Sun Journal in North Carolina reports that under the New Leash on Life Prison Canine Program, now in its second year, dogs are teamed with inmate trainers for eight weeks:

“I was lost when I first came to prison. But Callie (a Scottish terrier) has taught me a thing or two and knocked me down a peg or so,” said trainer Grady Meredith.

He said the dog has a mind of her own. “She’s obedient, but when she gets something on her mind, she stays on it,” Meredith said.

Callie landed in prison for extreme disobedience. We don't know what Meredith did.
